A Father’s Grief. A Nation’s Flag.
A Legacy That Will Never Fade.

Tragedy to Tribute

When George and Patricia Lutz lost their son Tony in combat, they became part of a club no one ever wants to join — Gold Star parents. But from unimaginable loss came an unstoppable mission.

With divine resolve, George Lutz transformed his grief into purpose: The Honor and Remember Flag — a symbol of sacrifice, remembrance, and national unity.

For every grieving family, for every fallen hero, George’s tireless fight continues. He honors the legacy of his son Tony and countless others by placing this flag in the hands of Gold Star families and demanding its permanent recognition in our nation’s capital.

He won’t stop. He can’t stop.

Because Tony was more than a soldier.
He was a good soldier.
And this is more than a flag — it’s a promise to never forget.

Let’s face it, we live in muddled times. So many things seem upside down, inverted, co-opted. The word “great” is so reflexively spat out it almost seems dismissive at times. Where do we find our bearings? I say we find them in the good. Early in the book, George refers to Tony as a “good soldier.” It shattered me. He gave his life to protect me and mine, you and yours, all of us. Gave his life. The humility in George referring to Tony as a “good soldier” represents everything that is true greatness.

George Lutz - Tragedy to Tribute

About the Author

GEORGE LUTZ is the founder and executive director of Honor and Remember Inc., a nonprofit nongovernmental organization, dedicated to recognizing America’s military fallen heroes and their families. For this purpose, he created the Honor and Remember flag to become a national symbol of gratitude and respect for those who died in service to the country. The organization’s mission includes bringing national awareness to the flag as well as educating others about its meaning and significance—additionally presenting personalized flags to the families of every fallen service member, from the past to the present time. As the father of Corporal Tony Lutz, who was killed in Iraq in 2005, George’s dedication is deeply personal. Tony’s sacrifice inspired the creation of the Honor and Remember flag that now is recognized officially in twenty-eight states. George and his wife, Patricia, are the proud parents of four other children, and grandparents to eleven. The Lutzes live in Virginia and have survived the joys and challenges of life together for over 50 years.
